Globalizing the Johannesburg Stock Exchange  July 31, 2002

The Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) marked another milestone in May
2002 when the JSE implemented the London Stock Exchange's SETS trading
engine. This sets the basis for JSE share prices to be flashed to more than
100,000 stock trading terminals around the world. The new system provides a
higher global profile for the JSE and is expected to increase the capital
inflows to Africa. Through the SETS engine, buy and sell orders entered in
South Africa are matched on the system operated in London and confirmation
is beamed back to South Africa in a fraction of a second.
